About Site Uppsala

Kemwell acquired Pfizer's pharmaceutical manufacturing site in Uppsala in August 2006 and retained all manufacturing contracts and people on site. The site consists of four separate units, one for making the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), second for producing and packaging tablets, capsules and suppositories, third for Quality Control and the fourth for warehouse activities. It has been inspected by USFDA, EMEA and Japanese regulatory authorities and supplies to over 80 markets worldwide.

Production Capacity

The site produces 750 million tablets, of which 600 million are coated annually. The packaging area at Uppsala has five packaging lines: two for bottled tablets, one for blisters, one for capsules and one for bulk. Site Uppsala produces a wide array of packaging for markets around the world. The result is around 100 different types of packaging combinations.

The Uppsala site produces both the active pharmaceutical ingredient as well as the finished products for the anti-inflammatory medicine Salazopyrine. Salazopyrine is one of those unusual pharmaceutical products that are still broadly used after more than 50 years in service.
